Mozambique Cashew Harvest 2021 is here once again and this marks an exciting month for all partners involved in the Connect Caju II project, as the cashew harvest season begins in Mozambique.
All the hard work that the small-holder farmers, cooperative managers and the Mozambican Association for the Promotion of Modern Cooperativism (AMPCM) have put in, will be rewarded by the most anticipated harvest yet. The Association of Cashew Industries (Aicaju) of Mozambique expects to sell around 160,000 tonnes of nuts across the country in the 2021/2022 campaign. According to Aicaju, climatic factors, maintenance, farmings practices and treatment contribute to the “favourable indicators” in the upcoming campaign. The cooperatives across Nampula Dan Zambézia that are involved in the CCII programme have also had the benefit of using digital tools to plan, predict and organise their cashew deliveries through mycoop.online.
According to data from the Mozambican Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, a projection represents a growth of 12% compared to a previous campaign, in which 145 thousand tons of cashew nuts were sold. This year, the Government of Mozambique has set a reference price of 43 meticais (0.57 euro) for the purchase of each kilo of cashew nuts from the producer, a concerted increase among the sector’s stakeholders compared to 37 meticais (0.49 cents). euro) from last year’s campaign.
Furthermore, this season our Project Manager, Simone Lopes Pereira has the opportunity to visit the cooperatives in Nampula, to hear and experience the campaign first hand. Simone will be interviewing coop managers, delivering training and analysing feedback on the field, participating in workshops and discussions with stakeholders.
